Retaining Walls for Lake Norman Lakefront Properties: What Actually Holds Up

Lakefront lots in Cornelius, Davidson, and Mooresville need walls engineered for water, slope, and freeze-thaw. Here's what we build and why.

Retaining Walls for Lake Norman Lakefront Properties: What Actually Holds Up

Lakefront property in the Lake Norman corridor is some of the most beautiful — and the most demanding — land we build on. The same slope that gives you a view also wants to slide toward the water every storm season. A retaining wall here isn't decorative; it's the difference between an enjoyable lawn and a yearly erosion repair.

What we use on Lake Norman builds

For walls under 4 ft, segmental retaining wall (SRW) block from Belgard or Techo-Bloc is our go-to: fast to install, engineered, and visually clean.

For walls over 4 ft, or anywhere with a surcharge load (driveway, pool, structure above), we step up to geogrid-reinforced systems and pull engineering stamps. North Carolina building code requires this above 4 ft — we don't cut corners on it.

For waterfront edges, we lean on natural boulder walls and stacked stone — they look like they've always been there and they drain beautifully.

Drainage is the wall

Every wall we build gets crushed-stone backfill, perforated drain tile, and proper outlets. Walls don't fail because the block was wrong — they fail because water built up behind them. If a contractor doesn't talk to you about drainage first, get a second opinion.
