Piedmont Red Clay Needs a Deeper Base
Our region sits on expansive Piedmont red clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. We spec 6–8" of compacted ABC stone for patios and 8–10" for driveways, over geotextile fabric. Skipping it is why most local patios fail within 5 years.
Summer Storms & Drainage Planning
Charlotte averages 43" of rain a year, much of it in intense summer bursts that clay soil absorbs slowly. Every project we install includes graded drainage — French drains, channel drains or downspout tie-ins — routed away from the foundation before we lay a single paver.
Lake Norman Waterfront
Shoreline lots mean Duke Energy permits, buffer setbacks and harsher UV. We seal permeable pavers near docks and waterproof structural stone within 50 ft of the waterline.
Belgard, Techo-Bloc & NC Stone
We build with materials stocked by local distributors — Belgard Catalina & Mega-Lafitt, Techo-Bloc Blu 60, and quarried NC fieldstone. Local stock means faster starts and easier future repairs.
15–20 Freeze-Thaw Cycles a Year
We sit in USDA Zone 7b with 15–20 freeze-thaw cycles annually. Saturated clay that heaves and refreezes pushes pavers out of plane within a few winters. Polymeric joint sand, proper edge restraint and base fabric are standard on every install.
Permits, HOAs & County Codes
Retaining walls over 30" need an engineered permit in Mecklenburg; over 48" in Iredell. Birkdale, Northstone, The Point and most Lake Norman HOAs require design review before breaking ground — we handle the full submittal package.
