Do You Need a Permit for a Retaining Wall in Mecklenburg County?

When a retaining wall needs an engineered permit in Mecklenburg County, what HOAs require, and how Outdoor Custom Hardscapes handles the whole submittal.

Do You Need a Permit for a Retaining Wall in Mecklenburg County?

Short answer: in Mecklenburg County, a retaining wall that retains more than 30 inches of soil (or any wall carrying a surcharge load like a driveway, pool or structure above it) generally requires an engineered permit. Anything under that, on a simple slope, usually doesn't. But the details matter — and getting them wrong means tearing the wall out.

When a permit is required

Walls over 30 inches of retained height in Mecklenburg County. Walls of any height with a surcharge (a driveway, pool, patio or building bearing on the soil above). Tiered walls that are close enough together to act as one taller wall — inspectors look at this closely.

When a permit applies, the wall needs an engineer's stamped design with geogrid reinforcement, drain rock and a perforated drain line behind every course. We handle the engineering, the permit and the inspections.

Don't forget the HOA

Even when the county doesn't require a permit, most Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson HOAs — Birkdale, Northstone, The Peninsula and others — require architectural design review before you break ground. We prepare HOA-ready drawings as part of the project so you're not stuck doing paperwork.

We handle the whole package

Permits, engineered drawings, HOA submittals and inspections are all part of what we do — not an add-on you're left to figure out. Call us before you design the wall and we'll make sure it's built right and built legal.
